I find that the wooden bins work well, but the fabric bag method helps hold in the heat and can be positioned in different spots (i.e. hidden). What I like to do is a combination of the two and cover my wooden bins with fabric to get the best of both worlds. In the end, you’ll probably end up with several batches of compost in piles, bags, bins, tumblers, etc at different stages of “doneness” (and then you’ll be like me and need to start working on a compost sifter).

@logos2600 If you keep it piled high you won’t believe how
great it will be. :)

@london1817 Okay thanks, today I layed out a circle of cinder blocks and made a pile in the middle. Will maybe cover it with landscape fabric to keep it warm and moist during the winter

london1817 @ 4:09 pm #

@logos2600 Its not necessary. you could dig a hole and dump your compost
material in it and do just as good as any of them out there. Including the pallet thing.

logos2600 @ 4:35 pm #

is the black fabric necessary? Are the 3x3x3 wood/pallet bins as good as this?

@SunEDragon After the 5 years best compost on earth! Haha!
That was soo funny! Thanks for the comment.

SunEDragon @ 6:18 pm #

We use a 5 stage composting system. 1, or the initial composter, is a trash can. 2 and 3 are wire, nothing on the sides, just the wire. 4 is another trash can, and 5 is a fancy store bought tumbling composter I got for my anniversary. Takes 5 years for the compost to reach the end, but it’s worth it.

@CultivatorsCorner Thanks for the comment!
I am trying to come up with more right now.
Have a great night! Rick.

Been trying lots of stuff too, this being my first summer composting. I started a bin like yours in the back about 2 weeks ago, its almost done. I spinkled rabbit food (main ingredient alfalfa meal) and cover it in starbucks coffee grounds when it stinks. Plus I turn it almost daily cuz im impatient. But I want those WORMS! I’ll have to try a smaller pile with the black cover. Awesome channel! I’ll be here for a while :D

Our compost gets too hot for earthworms. Only thing that works is a shovel to turn and hose to keep moist, so we get a free backyard gym membership and good dirt in the end. We have horse manure to compost along with leaves, sawdust and house scraps.

london1817 @ 8:43 pm #

@Glen1040 during summer with the right stuff in it I can turn it in 6 weeks.

Glen1040 @ 9:11 pm #

Nice.
How long does it take to turn into compost?

london1817 @ 9:41 pm #

@jihadacadien I have the same problem with the dogs!

jihadacadien @ 9:49 pm #

I just put it all in a big pile and turn it when I think about it….takes more time but it get composted eventually ;) but the bag would keep my dog out of it!
